At the end of the Three Kingdoms Period, the Sima family became prominent in the Wei Kingdom. In 265AD,Sima Yan usurped the power and founded a new dynasty-Jin.Jin was historically divided into two periods:the Western Jin(265-316 AD)with Luoyang as its capital city and the Eastern Jin (317-420AD)as Jiankang (present Nanjing in Jiangsu Province)the capital city.
The Jin Dynasty was the period which unified the country temporarily.Jin Dynasty was short and full of conflicts, yet the mix between nationalities was accelerated through the longterm contacts and mutual influence. The Jin Dynasty wasnamed after an old state of the Warring States Period.
The Western Jin Dynasty was the unifier of China after the Three Kingdoms Period and therefore stood in the traditionof the great Han Empire, the Eastern Jin only ruled over a partof China that had been still in development until then because it was remote from the antique centers in the Yellow River plain. The Eastern Jin was the first of a couple of dynasties(Southern Dynasties)that developed a culture different from that of northern China. As an economical center of whole China, the south should be of great importance for the whole of China until today.
