The Literature of the Long Turbulent Period

1 min read

The long period between the prosperous Han and Tang comprises the Three Kingdoms, the Jin Dynasty, the Southern and Northern Dynasties and the Sui Dynasty.Poets became increasingly interested in more lyric verses in which poetries sang their feeling and emotion by narrations of natural landscapes.Xie Lingyun of Eastern Jin is a typical one.

Later on,Tao Yuanming occupied the pride of place.Another form of poetry is Yuefu Shi 一a more populace one generated from the common people. It takes a more rustic way rather than stylish and the contents mainly concern labors and people’s daily life. The titles of these poems are all fixed and they are the names of music.

They can be sung by people. For example Walking in the Wormwood(Hao LiXing)by Cao Cao is a famous Yuefu Shi.The literal meaning of“Hao Li Xing”is”Walking in the wormwood”,with which its content has nothing to do.

With prevail of literature, some literature critiques appeared and among them Wen Xin Diao Long written by Liu Xie of the Northern Qi is remarkable..
