The Memory Garden of the Red Detachment of Women

The Memory Garden of the Red Detachment of Women，which was built in 2000，is located in Jiaji Town of Qionghai City，near the entrance of the eastern expressway，and covers an area of 200 mu.The garden constitutes of eight parts，including the Peace Square，Memorial Square，Memorial Hall of the Detachment of Women，Coconut Forest Village，and the House of the Former Local TyrantNan Batian and so on.With the convenient transportation and location，the garden is a special entertainment center for visitors to enjoy the tropical customs，sculptures，singing and dances.The garden is a wonderful red revolutionary spot to advocate patriotism.

The Memory Garden of the Red Detachment of Women is dedicated to a band of local women who served the revolution in the 1930s.Helping toprotect the communist base in Hainan，the women’s detachment recruited local peasants to join the fight.Their story is depicted in a famous revolutionary movie and a ballet respectively，which are still popular today.

The story of red detachment is popular in China and goes like the following.Qionghai was the place where communism began in Hainan，and where the red detachment of women achieved fame.On tropical Hainan Island，a group of courageous women pursued the communist battle against the Kuomintang regime in the 1930s.They were immortalized in what has become a classic Chinese communist revolutionary movie called”The Red Detachment of Women”.The movie won immediately popular acclaim and numerous awards in China，including the 1962 Baihua Prize，which is the Oscar of Chinese movies.

Now，we are in front of the memorial statue，which is made up of granite.Facing the south，it’s 3.7m high and with the base，it’s at a height of 6.8m intotal.The stone base is hexagon and enclosed by stone baluster，with an area of 40 and a garden behind the statue.The red army woman soldier was wearing a pair of straw sandals，with a bamboo hat on her shoulder，and the appearancefully demonstrates her heroine spirit.There is a gold inscription of Chinese characters”Hong Se Niang Zi Jun”by Hu Yaobang on the frontage of the base.On the back are the Chinese characters illustrating the heroic deeds of the red detachment of women.

When you come to the Peace Square，you will immerse yourselves in the solemn atmosphere.The statue of peace dove is in the center of the Peace Square.The statue is 8m high，12m long and 4m wide.Composed of the chain，bamboo hat，horn and peace dove，it is the symbol of the Peace Square，and stands for the history of Qiongya women’s resistance to oppression，struggle for freedom and pursuing for liberation.The whole statue organically illustrates the everlasting theme-Peace and War.
