The Oriental Pearl Radio&TV Tower locates at the tip of Lujiazui in the Pudong district,by the side of Huangpu River,opposite the Bund.that makes it a distinct landmark in the area.

The construction began in 1990 and the tower was completed in 1994.With a height of 468m(1,535 feet)it was the tallest building in China from 1994-2007.It is classified as an AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration.The tower is brightly lit in different LED sequences at night.

The tower features 11 big and small spheres.The two largest spheres havediameters of 50m(164 ft)for the lower and 45m(148ft)for the upper sphere.They are linked by three columns,each 9 m(30 ft)in diameter.The highest sphere is 14m(46 ft)in diameter.

The tower has fifteen observatories.The highest(known as the Space Module)is 350 m(1148 ft)high.The lower levels are 263 m(863 ft)high(Sightseeing Floor)and 90 m(295 ft)high(Space City).

The upper observation platform has an glass floor with a length of 150m,and a width of 90m There is a revolving restaurant at a heightof 267m(876 ft).The project also contains exhibition facilities,and a shopping mall.There is also a 20-room hotel called the Space Hotel between the two large spheres.

The design of the building is said to remind people of the poem Pipa Song by Bai Juyi which describes the wonderful sprinkling sound of pipa musical instrument,like pearls’falling on a jade plate.
