During the long reign of the Tang Dynasty, accomplishments were made in all fields of science and learning but the most remarkable one was in literature.

The Tang is famous for its poetic giants and their imperishable works. It produced numerous poets among the ranks of emperors and empresses, generals and courtiers,Daoist hermits and Buddhist monks, court ladies and singing girls, who together contributed to the greatness of Tang poetry. The endlesslist of Tang poets includes of world statures such as Li Bai ,Du Fu ,Bai Juyi and so on.

The Tang Poetry is usually divided into four periods:1.Early Tang;2.Flourishing Tang;3.Mid-Tang);and 4.Late Tang.

The Early Tang

There were”Four Distinguished Poets of the Early Tang” .They were Wang Bo ,Luo Binwang ,Yang Jiong and Lu Zhaolin.

Wang Bo

Wang Bo(650-676 AD),a native of JinzhouLongmen (present-day Hejin County,Shanxi Province),was especially intelligent in his childhood.

Regarded as a prodigy,he began writing work at nine, and by fourteen he was able to produce the most eminent prose A Eulogy to Tengwang Pavilion.

Tengwang Pavilion was built by the Ganjiang River, near the city of Nanchang in 659 AD.It was rebuilt in 675 AD.After the rebuilding, many scholars were invited to a feast held on the pavilion. They were expected to write poems to celebrate the rebuilding and to describe the wonderful view of the famous resort.

At the banquet, the poets were reluctant to produce anything because it was such an important occasion on which so many learned people got together.

Then Wang Tong ,a scholar, asked his fourteen years old son,Wang Bo,to write something to“set the ballrolling”.In Chinese, people would say”To throw a piece of brick in order to induce others to show their iades”.To everyone’s surprise, the boy received the task without hesitation.

Having pondered for a little while,he began to read aloudhis lines, showing no modesty but confidence. The beginning sentences were simple and plain,so the adults frowned at him, paying little attention to his chanting. But,as he read along to describe the beautiful scenery of the sunset on the river below, the following sentences aroused a great excitement among all the people present.
