The role of Peking Opera
1 min readThe role types of Jing are taken by any male character who has some outstanding characteristics such as bravery, honesty, thoughtlessness, or even treachery.
The Jing role types all have painted faces, which distinguish their different personalities: in general, a red face indicates a loyal and righteous figure; a black face denotes an honest or crude character; a white face indicates a treacherous and cunning person; a yellow face shows a cruel character; a purple face shows someone who is both calm, brave and decisive; whereas a blue face denotes a violent, especially an obstinate and unruly person, etc. The role types of Jing are further divided into Dahualian (heavily painted face) and Erhualian (less painted face). The former stresses singing, which should be loud and strong.
The latter mainly focuses on acting, laying emphasis on the actor’s movements and postures on stage.
