THE SILKY GREENS Golden Gulf Golf, Jinwan
2 min readhuhai’s historical Tangjiawan area hosts the country’s second golf course, laid down in 1985 to declare the city’s golfing ambition. Over the past three decades, Zhuhai Golf Club witnessed the rise of China’s first golf champion and the country’s first golfing generation, and has grown to be the most senior in the city’s golfing destinations and a prestigious resort serving golfers from all over the world. The 360-degree views from the resort’s various vantage points are simply breathtaking.
The year 2003 saw the opening of Golden Gulf Golf Resort, built on 500 hectares of reclaimed land and put together by Scottish professional golfer Colin Montgomerie, in the city’s “aviation town” in western Jinwan District. Golden Gulf is a mere half an hour’s drive from downtown Zhuhai. Composed of an 18-hole course and a 9-hole floodlit course, the only one of its kind in Zhuhai, the high-class resort adds a splendid Scottish touch to the city’s golfing panorama, creating a striking contrast to its predecessors.
The natural topography of the terrain allows Colin Montgomerie to implant early Scottish golf course design elements, or “golf links”, into this fascinating seaside site.
The cunning names of the course’s different zones: Troon, Turnberry, Nairn, fully demonstrate the designer’s wish to add flavor of his homeland to Asia. The clubhouse decor too has very strong Scottish feel suggestive of the designer’s roots.
As the name suggests, the course is characterized by the strong presence of water. In fact a first impression would be that the course was completely surrounded by water.
And yet, only three of the 27 holes in this course of bent, grass-covered fairways and Tifdwarf’ed greens require an across-the-water hit. In addition to the brilliant emerald-blue of the surrounding sea contrasting with the silky greens, it is generally a very golfer-friendly course.
Golden Gulf’s strong Scottish flavor is crafted by Colin Montgomerie.
