1 min readTraditional Chinese Medicine (TCM in short) originated in ancient China. It is a science studying the human life process as well as the fight against diseases. It has its unique charm.
The philosophy inherent in TCM shows the soul of Chinese culture. Through the analysis of the cultural environment and cultural background which breed TCM, it is easy to find that the agricultureoriented culture in ancient China has a great influence on TCM. Characteristics including pragmatism and natural adaptation are fully shown in the TCM system. All the aspects constituting the Chinese social life system such as philosophy, religion, science, technology, ethics, art and folklore, have a profound impact on the formation and development of TCM.
The thinking methods such as speculating the internal organs’ pathological changes by observing the external appearance of life or analogizing from the similarity of the appearances of the diseases and natural phenomena, are the means to understand human body and diseases based on the above-mentioned traditional Chinese medicine theories. Characteristics of the traditional Chinese culture included in TCM once were taken as a weapon by some people to denounce TCM.
They thought that these characteristics were an important proof showing that TCM was unscientific. However, it is these characteristics that make TCM fascinating and are the inner factors for the survival and development of TCM.
