2 min readTraditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),an integral part of Chinese culture, has a long history and has been sustained by research into every aspect of its use.For thousands of years it has played an important part in curing disease and protecting the health of the Chinese people, thus contributing greatly to the growth and prosperity of China.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on its own theories and contains a unique system in itself. It holds that man and his natural environment form an organic whole;many diseases are linked with the environment. It also holds that the various parts of the human body form anorganic whole. When one is ill,the whole body is affected,so treatment should emphasize the physical condition of the individual as a whole.
TCM,with its unique diagnostic methods, systematic approach, abundant historical literature and materials,is still widely used in treating diseases. It is a medical science which includes theories, herbology, acupuncture, cupping, massage,Qi Gong, etc.
Theories of TCM
TCM began evolving approximately between 2000 BC and 4000 BC;its root is considered by most to be Taoism. The Taoist main focus is on the observable and natural laws of the universe and the implications for human beings’relationship to the universe.TCM’s long history allowed much time for observation, study and speculation by many people. This activity yielded myriad principles.Below are the fundamental principles for health and healing:
·There are natural laws that govern the universe. The natural order of the universe is harmonious, and all life is interconnected.
·The universe is dynamic;change is constant.Lack of change will cause illness.
·Humans are a part of the universe and subject to natural laws.If we live according to them,we will be healthy.
These principles are the axioms about existence that form the foundation for Yin-Yang,the Five Elements, and Qi,which are the primary theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
