1 min readUrumqi International Airport is located in Diwopu, northwest of Urumqi and 16km from downtown. It is an international channel hub from China to Central Asia, West Asia, Europe and Africa and one of the five gateway airports in China. Urumqi Airport was established in 1935 and opened to the outside world in 1973. It has gone through reconstruction many times, particularly, in order to adapt to the international requirements for openness and economic development in Xinjiang. The Reconstruction and Expansion Project’s total investment amounted to 1.953 billion Yuan for the re-construction of Urumqi International Airport in 1994. In 2009, T3 Terminal, with total area of115,000m an investment of USD1.05 5 billion.this project created an expansion which improves the environment and safety for travelers using airline services to enter and leave the port at Urumgi International Airport. At present, open international routes include: Beijing-Urumqi-Sharjah-Istanbul, Urumqi-Almaty, Urumqi-Bishkek, Urumqi-Tashkent, Urumqi-Novosibirsk, Urumqi-Jekaterinburg-Moscow, Urumqi-Islamabad, and Urumqi-Teheran. There are also chartered airplanes for tourism from Urumqi to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Seoul.
