The clay army,known in English as the Terracotta Warriors,was excavated near the tomb of the first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang in 1974.It consists of several thousand statues of soldiers,mainly infantry,generals and chariot drivers.All figures are a bit bigger than the life size.While during the Shang Dynasty,human sacrifices after the death of a ruler were yery common,the trend to humanization during the time of Zhou made it possible to replace real guardians for the dead ruler with clay statues.
Three-color glazing was very popular during the Tang Dynasty.The three-legged ball-shaped vessel in Picture 12-2 is totally glazed with brown color,augmented only with green colored leaves,giving the vessel the appearance of a pumpkin.
Blue and white Blue-and-white porcelain is prevalent because it is cheaper to produce the multi-colored vessels or objects.The plate in Picture 12-3 is one example of the huge treasury of tablewares produced during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Industrially manufactured porcelain is so cheap that it has replaced metal and stone objects on a large scale.
