Villas and Celebrities in Deqing

Mogan Mountain atracts people with the three wonderful sights and the four peculiarities, but more than 200 fine and exquisite villas dotted on the mountain are quite a sight for tourists as well. Each villa has no resemblance to others in shape. Most of them are one or two storey buildings integrated with the natural sceneries. These unique constructions in different shapes including the architectural styles of Europe, America, Russia and Japan gain the laudatory title of “World Construction Museum”for Mogan Mountain.

Taking a sweeping view of those villas, the style of Gothic architecture characterized by pointed arches, clusters of columns; the European constructions set with tilted roofs; and the structure blended the idea of eclecticism all present the harmonious unification to the surroundings.

Some stand on the top of the mountain looking far into the distance; some are neighbours at higher or lower suitable locations conforming to the natural features of terrace; some sit by the side of brook listening to the gurgles of water; some are dimly visible in tall bamboo showing off their red roofs. It is more attractive to tourists that almost each villa contains its own profound culture and historical story. The Empress Hotel is a hotel where Mao Zhedong, chairman of the Communist Party of China once stayed, and Marshal Chen Yi visited several times when Zhang Yunyi,a senior general convalesced there. The Wuling Village is the place where Chiang Kai Shek honeymooned, and attended conferences more than once.

Baiyunshan Mansion was built by Huang Fu, the first foreign minister of Republic of China, where Zhou Enlai and Chiang Kai Shek as the representatives of two parties had peace talks between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang in the Anti-Japanese War. Jinyi House belonged to Zhang Jingjiang,a business tycoon in silk, and the villas in deep forest were possessed by Du Yuesheng and Zhang Xiaolin. The two public figures, together with Huang Jinrong were called three bigwigs or bullies in the old Shanghai. Placing oneself among so many villas, one seems to get into an exotic atmosphere with a feeling of travelling to many countries. Fascinated by these elegant villas, tourists would absolutely linger on without thought of leaving.
