Wood carvings are closely associated with people’s life on the plateau as the main decorations for the architecture and daily utensils today. Architectural wood carvings are mainly used on beam columns, lintels and other places, and furniture such as Tibetan desks and cabinets.
The development of wood carvings was motivated by religious beliefs to a great extent. There are a great number and variety of carved beams and painted rafters in monasteries. There are also carvings for shrines and Buddha figures, together with cast copper and clay sculptures. In the forest areas, wood carving statues are still a common way of primitive worship. In Tibet, the most unique wood carving art forms are the sealed edition of wood carvings,”Duo Ma Ban Dan(wood carving moldings),”mantras and the block carving “religious flags.”
