Yin and Yang cycle of traditional Chinese medicine
1 min readThere are two main cycles involved in the Five Elements:the Sheng and the Ke.The Sheng Cycle is more”Yang,”expansive, oriented with an emphasis on growth and thus generating. The Ke Cycle is more“Yin,”contractive, oriented with an emphasis on control and thus restraining.
As shown in Table 11-2,the Yang organs link together to form a circuit which includes the Five Phases as do the Yin organs. If something is wrong with an organ,it can be re-balanced bythe Sheng Cycle and/or the Ke Cycle in its own circuit. Also,it can be re-balanced through the complementary organ in the same phase but in the other circuit.
The concepts of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements provide the intellectual framework of much of Chinese scientific thinking in the field of medicine. The organs of the body are seen tobe interrelated in the same sorts of ways as other natural phenomena, and are best understood by looking for correlations and correspondences.1Illness is seen as a disturbance in the balance of Yin-Yang or the Five Elements caused by emotions,Heat or Cold,or other influences.Therapy thus depends on accurate diagnosis of the source of the imbalance.
