Zu Chongzhi(429-500),was a great mathematician and astronomer during the Song and Qi Dynasties.His main contributions to the development ofscience and technology include the computation of pi the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter,and the compilation of The Daming Calendar. Zu worked out the numerical value of pi between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927.It was the most advanced achievement worldwide at that time,while Western mathematicians didn’t figure it out until several centuries later.In The Daming Calendar,Zu Chongzhi took into consideration the precession of the equinoxes for the first time in China.This was a major breakthrough picture 105 1 Chongzhi in the history of the Chinese calendar.
Li Daoyuan
Li Daoyuan(466-527),a Northern Wei officer,wrote a comprehensive geographic work,Commentary on the Waterways Classic. This important work recorded the hydrology of the Yangtze River area and included detailed records of the source,vegetation,relief and networks of 1,252 rivers and watercourses with ample illustrations and maps.5 Ancient watermarks in forms of fish and inscriptions have been found in White Crane Ridge in today’s Chongqing.Those records of the hydrology of the Yangtze River accord with the narration in this book.
Jia Sixie
Jia Sixie(the 6th century),a viceroy of the Northern Wei,compiled a book named Essential Skils in Improving People’s Life,in which he summed up laboring people’s experience and skills in farming and husbandry.Some advanced skills of planting and drought control have proven to be effective.
